“Trauma is not the story of something that happened back then, It's the current imprint of that pain, horror, and fear living inside people.”
Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk
Trauma may originate from a variety of places and incidents including home, school, and religious environments.
What seems certain though is much of the Jewish community is still struggling with the mental and emotional impact of the holocaust, as noted in this study.*
"Severe mental illness may affect not only those suffering from it but also those who are in close personal contact with them (Lombardo & Motta, 2008). We hypothesized therefore that a higher incidence of current and lifetime mental health problems and psychiatric diagnoses in Holocaust survivors are related to a higher incidence of mental health problems in Holocaust Survivors Offspring"

To heal from psychological and emotional trauma, one needs to resolve the unpleasant feelings and memories they've long avoided, discharge pent-up “fight-or-flight” energy, learn to regulate strong emotions, and rebuild their ability to trust themselves, and other people.
